Welcome Email Makeover featuring Paige Cole

Even when it’s pretty damn good, you can refine and optimize your copy so it’s getting you bigger results...

more click throughs...

more head nods…

more cries of “Hell, yeesss!” from your list.

And your “welcome to my list” email is no exception.

That’s because your welcome email is BY FAR the most-opened email you have in your funnel.

Did you know that welcome emails have an open rate between 50 and 60%, which is about 4x the average email open rate?

Why are welcome email open rates so high?

Because people just signed up to get something from you and have issued a personal invitation into their inbox.

So even though making a good impression on your new subscribers with a welcome email is hella smart, not everyone has a killer welcome email.

In fact, a lot of entrepreneurs fumble an epic relationship-building opportunity and snuff out potential conversions with a bland and basic welcome email (or no email at all)… because they don’t realize what a great opportunity their welcome email is to connect with their new subscribers and foster future engagement.

3 Common Types of Welcome Emails

Type 1: The No-Email Welcome that leaves new subscribers hanging and wondering if they're even on your list.

Type 2: The "Here's Your Freebie" Fly-By that delivers what you promised but does nothing to foster the relationship you hope to have with your new subscriber.

Type 3: The "Welcome To The Party" email that can vary in its effectiveness based on what's in the email and what's not.

So if you’re ready to take advantage of a prime opportunity to wow your new subscribers and turn their click of a button into a genuine relationship…

then keep reading, because I’m going to show you how to make over your welcome email.

Introducing Paige Cole

I thought the best way to help you understand how to make your own welcome email better would be to walk you through an example of a real-life email from someone who's doing a lot of things right.

The email I'm sharing with you comes from Paige Cole, a stripper business coach, mastermind mindset coach, manifestation expert, author, and speaker.

Her story is fascinating and proves how powerful niching down can be for growing your business.

More than that, Paige is passionate about serving her audience. And her enthusiastic email voice matches how she shows up in her FB lives and podcast interviews.

(I was lucky enough to find Paige through a mutual colleague, personal branding strategist Sarah Lynn of Sarah Lynn Co. The episode they did together about finding your niche is brilliant.)

The Before Email

Let’s take a look at Paige’s original email…

Paige Cole welcome email makeover

My favourite things about this email

1) Paige's passion and enthusiasm shine through and are contagious.

"Hello beautiful Joanne!"

"I am SOOO excited"

"I can't wait to meet you"

"I love staying connected and having fun while we're at it"

"I cannot wait to share all of my passion and knowledge with you"

"Get ready for this fun and wild ride with me, because I have so much in store for you!"

As a subscriber, I feel welcome and excited to be part of Paige's community. Great tone.

2) She tells me what I can expect now that I'm on her list

"learn about all things manifestation, money, and entrepreneurship!

"helping to inspire and motivate you to achieve more in your life and business!"

"staying connected and having some fun while we're at it:)"

"I expand my horizon and yours."

"Get ready for this fun and wild ride with me"

Paige teases what’s coming up and piques my curiosity, which makes it more likely that I’ll read her next email.

3) She offers a next step (actually, she offers several, but we'll get to that in a minute...)

"join me on Facebook as well as Instagram."

"Ready to take your dancing business to the next level? Enroll in my Masterclass here: 5 Blocks From $10k Months"

"If you haven't had a chance to listen to my latest podcast episode catch it here"

"Grab a copy of my book here"

She doesn't leave me hanging. She provides more value and next steps that I can take to draw me further into her community.

4) She tells me about herself and starts to build her authority.

"A little about me:

  • Dancer of 11 years

  • Master Mindset & Success Coach

  • NLP Practitioner

  • Certified Hypnotherapist

  • Manifestation Expert

  • Business Coach & Consultant

I have over 14 years of manifestation & entrepreneurial experience."

She also tells me later on the page that she has a podcast and a book, and these are instant authority builders.

Clearly, Paige has tons of training and experience in her niche and I feel like I’m in good hands when it comes to learning more about manifestation.

How Paige Can Make Her Welcome Email Do More For Her Business

Now that we’ve seen what makes Paige’s welcome email solid, let’s talk about how to make it even more effective, so that she can boost her new subscriber engagement and create a deeper emotional connection with them right away.

NOTE: YOU CAN SEE THE FULL EMAIL MAKEOVER AFTER THE TIPS…

Tip 1: Make the email more about your new subscriber.

The welcome email is a make or break email, because if I don't see enough value, I'm less likely to open the next emails.

As a subscriber, I’ll be honest with you: what I care about most is what being on Paige's list can do for me.

Your subscribers feel the same about being on your list, too. → “What’s in it for me?”

So how can Paige make the email more about her new readers?

She can tell her new subscriber what joining her list means about them and assign meaning to the action they just took. Which was to sign up for her freebie.

Tip 2: Build trust and boost engagement by addressing the subscriber's pain points and then painting a picture of a better future.

When you clearly describe what your reader is currently experiencing and what she most wants, you demonstrate that you understand them.

When you demonstrate that you know and understand them, you build trust.

And if you want to convert readers into buyers, they have to trust that you can deliver.

So include details that show that you empathize with your reader’s current reality. You might even include details about what your life was like before you figured out the solution to your problem - which is also their problem.

Tip 3: Show authority and what’s possible for your reader’s future.

The welcome email is a great place to show and tell your reader how you’re the perfect person to help them solve their problems.

Include details that help build your authority and position you as an expert in your industry. And include more details about how being on your list will help your reader transform into the person they want to become.

Tip 4: Include a strong call to action in the P.S. and save all other calls to action for future emails.

The more calls to action you include, the less likely it is for your reader will engage.

Decision fatigue is a real thing, so make it easy on your new subscriber and tell them what single action you want them to take next.

Readers also tend to pay attention to the P.S., so this is great place for a paid offer, so long as the offer makes sense for your new subscribers.

In this case, Paige's masterclass for $7.77 is a great entry-level offer that would appeal to new subscribers who want a taste of what Paige has to offer, but aren't necessarily ready to dive right in with a bigger package.

Tip 5: Focus on your copy by keeping your email mostly text.

You’ll notice that the “After” email is free of graphics.

There’s a simple reason for that: plain text emails convert better.

That doesn’t mean a well-chosen image, video, or gif can’t be an interest-grabber. A champagne toast gif could be perfect about 3 lines in👇

But if you’re interested in conversions, keeping your emails plain and simple is the way to go (unless your email data shows otherwise).

The After Email

So here's what the new email looks like all put together...
