Strength + Its Many Forms (PLUS: The Mission At The Heart of My Business)

Strength comes in many forms, right?

Being able to bench 200 lbs and run a 3:15 marathon.

Saying no to someone whose opinion matters to you.

Asking for help when you need it.

Giving help when someone else needs it.

Acknowledging that you want Something Different than your neighbours, friends, and family want...

and giving yourself the okay to want that Something Different...

even though you know you’ll take shit for it.

It's scary to stand up and say, "What you want isn't what I want."

Especially when it seems like everyone around you seems happy enough working a 9-to-5...

running the kids to soccer while eating Subway in the minivan 4 nights a week...

and vacationing at the family cabin every summer.

One of the reasons I started an online business was because I looked around at my life and felt like I was settling.

I had so many things I said I wanted - amazing husband, 2 healthy kids, a dental practice, a nice home in a safe neighbourhood, enough money to travel - but I felt like it wasn't really what I wanted.

Even writing about it now, I feel embarrassed to complain about what is ultimately layers of privilege.

Why couldn't I just be grateful for my abundance and carry on the way things were?

My life – though safe – felt restrictive.

Like a pair of brand new, fresh-from-the-dryer, no-stretch jeans that were a size too small.

The work I was doing impaired my spirit, just like too-tight jeans cutting off blood flow to my legs.

It felt greedy to want something else.

Honestly? I thought there was something wrong with me, because everyone else seemed to be doing fine.

Why couldn't I just be happy?

It wasn't until I stumbled into the world of online marketing via Amy Porterfield's podcast that I even considered there could be another way.

I began to imagine a life where my desire to travel wasn't constrained by the regular hours of a dental practice.

One where I could explore work I felt passionate about, instead of work I was trained to do, that made my back and neck hurt every day.

A life where I could control my own schedule, write more, and have more freedom to travel.

The drive to create a business that gives me MORE CHOICES is at the heart of what I do.

In fact, my mission is to help other women grow their businesses so they have more choices, too.
